I took a little family poll once: favourite Disney ship, and favourite itinerary. The ship vote was split right down the middle. The itinerary vote was unanimous. Our 11-night transatlantic crossing wins, hands down.
What a repositioning cruise is
A few times a year, Disney moves a ship from one region to another: from Florida to Europe for the summer season, back again in the fall, or through the Panama Canal between coasts. Instead of sailing those ships empty, Disney sells the trip as a cruise.
These sailings are long, usually 11 to 14 nights, and they only come around once or twice a year. They visit ports you won't find on regular itineraries, and they include lots of days at sea.
Why they're such good value
When I compare cruises, I always look at the cost per night. On a repositioning cruise, the total is higher because the trip is longer, but the per-night price is often much lower than a short three- or four-night sailing on the same ship. Sometimes it's low enough that you can book a verandah for less per night than an inside room on a shorter cruise.
Price is what you pay. Value is what you get for what you pay. Repositioning cruises are where Disney's value really shines.
The magic of sea days
Some people worry that all those sea days will be boring. Honestly, they were the best part. There's something incredibly peaceful about being in the middle of the ocean for days at a time. You sleep in, linger over breakfast, see shows you'd normally skip, and actually use the spa, the pools and the adult areas.
Disney also adds extras on these sailings that you won't find on regular itineraries: special entertainment, unique events, and rare character photo opportunities.
Why ours was unforgettable
- It was long. You truly can't beat the extra sea days.
- New ports. Our crossing included stops we'd never visited before.
- A new city. It started in London, our first time there, so we added a few days before sailing.
- Our people. We sailed with a big family group: grandparents, aunts and cousins. That's what made it.
Who they're perfect for
Repositioning cruises are a great fit for families with older kids, friend groups, multigenerational trips and anyone who loves a slower pace. They're one-way, so you'll fly into one city and home from another. I'll help you plan the flights and any pre-cruise stay.
Book early
These sailings are rare and sell fast. A recent Disney Wish transatlantic sold out quickly, and prices climbed steadily as rooms sold. If a crossing is on your bucket list, find it here and send it to me. I'll watch for the next one and help you book the moment it opens, booked through me of course.
